Check Out The Biggest Snowfalls Recorded In Montana History

We all have a memory of a particular snowstorm that lives in infamy to all that experienced it.

Growing up in South Dakota, I remember my senior year we got almost 2 feet of snow over a 24-hour period; that wouldn't even make the top 10 on our list here in Montana.

Just How Much Snow Does Montana See Each Year?

While big snowstorms can dominate the news cycle when they happen, most of the snow Montana gets each winter just accumulates all throughout the season.

It might surprise you to find out that Montana is not one of the snowiest states in America.

According to NYSkiBlog, the state that gets the most snow each year is Vermont, while Montana is down at #16. However, our biggest 1-day snowfall does rank in the top 5 all time.

Do We Get More Snow Today Than Yesterday In Montana?

I've heard plenty of old-timers say that the winters in Montana these days are nothing like they used to be.

It's true the winters from days gone by might have been colder, but the recent warmer weather during winter has meant bigger snowfalls, "since warmer air holds more moisture, more snow is likely to fall when temperatures are just below freezing," according to Stacker, who gathered the information from the National Centers for Environmental Information.

Together they compiled the 10 days that Montana experienced the most snow over a 24-hour period.
